The Sankofa Question

thesankofaquestion.com

Science asks questions. So do we. Now you can ask us back.

The Sankofa Question is a solo-edited investigative science magazine. That means every article is researched, written, fact-checked, and formatted by one person โ€” the Editor. No editorial board. No corporate parent. No agenda beyond the evidence.

This also means your messages land directly on one desk. No filters, no interns, no automated triage. Below is how to reach that desk, depending on what you need.

๐Ÿ“ฌ General Inquiries

Questions about the magazine, subscription issues, or partnership ideas:

Email: editor@thesankofaquestion.com Response window: 48โ€“72 hours

The Editor reads every message personally. If you don't hear back within three business days, resend โ€” Ghost's spam filter occasionally eats first-time senders. Include "TSQ Inquiry" in your subject line to bypass that.

โœ… Corrections & Fact-Check Submissions

This magazine cites primary sources in APA format and takes accuracy seriously. If we got something wrong โ€” a statistic, a date, a citation, a scientific mechanism โ€” we want to know before anyone else catches it.

Email: corrections@thesankofaquestion.com

Subject line: CORRECTION: [Article Title]

Please include:

  1. The specific claim you are disputing, quoted verbatim.
  2. The article title and section where it appears.
  3. A peer-reviewed source, official dataset, or primary document contradicting the claim. Include full APA-formatted reference.
Published corrections will be annotated in-text with a dated editorial footnote and logged in a standing Corrections Register. We do not quietly edit mistakes and pretend they never happened.

๐Ÿ“ Letters to the Editor

Reflections, rebuttals, expansions on published features, or praise where due. Selected letters will be published in the "Reader's Corner" section of the following issue with attribution.

Email: letters@thesankofaquestion.com

Guidelines:

  • Maximum 400 words.
  • Focus on substantive engagement with content โ€” not personal vendettas.
  • Include your name and professional affiliation (optional but recommended).
  • By submitting, you grant The Sankofa Question permission to publish your letter in whole or excerpted form with editorial latitude for length.
A good letter doesn't agree with us. It sharpens us. Send your sharpest.

๐Ÿ”’ Secure Tips & Whistleblower Channel

If you are a researcher, industry insider, or community advocate with information regarding scientific misconduct, undisclosed conflicts of interest, suppressed data, or institutional cover-ups โ€” and you need confidentiality โ€” do not use standard email.

Encrypted communication options:

  • Proton Mail: Send encrypted email to thesankofaquestion@proton.me (if you also use Proton Mail or another PGP-compatible service, your message is end-to-end encrypted automatically).
  • Signal: Request our Signal number by sending a brief note to editor@thesankofaquestion.com with the subject line "Signal request" and a one-sentence reason.
Metadata is minimized on both channels. The Editor does not retain source identifying information beyond what is necessary for verification. Confidentiality is treated as an ethical obligation, not a legal convenience.

๐Ÿงฉ Puzzle Submissions & Solutions

The Sankofa Question publishes a 25ร—25 crossword and a 25-term word search in every issue. We track solver performance and feature top submissions.

Email: puzzles@thesankofaquestion.com

Submit:

  • Photos or scans of completed grids (crossword and/or word search)
  • Your name as you'd like it credited
  • Time to completion (honour system)
The first three correct submissions each issue cycle receive a mention in the "Solver Spotlight" and a complimentary digital back-issue bundle. Bragging rights are, regrettably, non-transferable.

โœ๏ธ Pitch an Investigation

The Sankofa Question covers stories where science intersects with justice, equity, and power. Priority topics include:

  • Health funding inequities (e.g., sickle cell vs. cystic fibrosis research dollars)
  • Algorithmic bias in healthcare and criminal justice
  • Climate-driven ecological collapse in the Global South
  • Data sovereignty and extractive research practices
  • Maternal mortality disparities across racial lines

Email: pitches@thesankofaquestion.com

Pitch requirements:

  • 250โ€“500 words maximum
  • State the central question your investigation answers
  • Identify at least three primary sources you intend to cite
  • Disclose any conflicts of interest, funding ties, or institutional affiliations
  • Attach writing samples (published or unpublished) in .odt, .docx, or PDF
Do not send completed manuscripts unsolicited. Pitch the question first. If the question is worth asking, we'll commission the piece.

๐Ÿ”„ Reprint & Licensing Requests

All content in The Sankofa Question is original work. Educational institutions, nonprofits, and publications may request reprint permissions.

Email: rights@thesankofaquestion.com Subject line: REPRINT REQUEST: [Article Title]

Please specify:

  • Intended use (classroom, newsletter, anthology, etc.)
  • Circulation or audience size
  • Whether the reprint will be print, digital, or both
Noncommercial educational use is typically granted gratis. Commercial use is assessed case by case.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Follow & Engage

Real-time corrections, behind-the-scenes research notes, and the occasional hot take.

Pinterest and Instagram will follow once we have visual assets worth posting. We are a text-first publication with standards. No filler content. No engagement bait.

โ“ Quick FAQ

Can I advertise in the magazine? Not at this time. The Sankofa Question operates on a subscriber-funded model to preserve editorial independence. When sponsorship opens, it will be disclosed transparently with clear firewall policies.

Is the Editor available for interviews or panels? Yes. Direct requests to editor@thesankofaquestion.com with "Interview Request" in the subject line. Include your publication or organization, the topic, and proposed format.

How do I report a broken link or technical issue on the site? Email webmaster@thesankofaquestion.com with the page URL and a screenshot. Ghost CMS glitches happen. We fix them fast.

Can I contribute to the crossword or glossary? Absolutely. Send proposed clues, terms, or definitions to puzzles@thesankofaquestion.com. Accepted contributions are credited in the subsequent issue.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Editorial Standards

The Sankofa Question adheres to the following commitments:

  1. Transparency of sources โ€” every factual claim cites its origin in APA format.
  2. Correction accountability โ€” errors are fixed publicly with dated footnotes, not silently scrubbed.
  3. Independence โ€” no funder, institution, or advertiser influences editorial decisions.
  4. Confidentiality of sources โ€” whistleblower identities are protected as a matter of principle, not policy.
These are not aspirations. They are operating conditions. Hold us to them.

Go back and fetch it. Then ask the harder question.
