About The Sankofa Question Magazine
Go back and fetch it. Then ask the harder question.
The Sankofa Question Magazine is an independent investigative science magazine serving the Black diaspora. We examine the systems behind the story: who funds the research, who runs the trials, who holds the patents, who sits on the editorial boards — and who gets left out of the record.
Launched in September 2026, the magazine covers science, health, technology, history, and power as they intersect with Black communities across Africa, North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Oceania, and wherever Black communities live and are studied. Our reporting priorities include health funding inequities, algorithmic bias, environmental justice, data sovereignty, and the extraction of knowledge from communities that rarely receive credit for producing it.
We do not celebrate progress — we interrogate it.
How we work
This is a solo-edited publication. Every article is researched, written, fact-checked, and formatted by one person: Ferron Broomfield, the magazine's founder, publisher, and editor. No editorial board. No corporate parent. No agenda beyond the evidence. External experts are consulted when a story warrants it, and we say so when they are.
Our methods sit at the intersection of investigative journalism and academic research. We work from primary documents — agency records, court filings, correspondence, datasets, patents — before commentary. We check claims against competing interpretations, state our limitations in print, and cite every factual claim to a source you can check yourself. The magazine follows the citation standard of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th Edition.
Full details are published in our Operational Standards.
When we get it wrong
We correct ourselves in public. Our corrections state what we originally reported, what the verified record shows, and why the change was made. When an official disputes our framing and is right, we say so in the article — by name, in full. Accountability journalism that won't hold itself accountable is marketing.
